MathWorld

MathWorld is a wonderful mathematics resource that is well worth browsing. It’s nice to see it has a sense of humour too – see 2001 A Space Odyssey and 42.

Does anybody know of other similar humorous entries at MathWorld or at other such resources such as PlanetMath or the maths pages of Wikipedia?

  1. My friend recently emailled me this link

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_ball_theorem

But aside from the school boy hilarity of the mention of “hairy ball” Wikipedia resist any temptation to make further jokes…

  2. The Hairy Ball Theorem was a favourite of Prof Christopher Zeeman at Warwick who often talked about it. However, we weren’t able to follow a proof of the theorem until an Algebraic Topology course in the 3rd year. There it became the Generalized Hairy Ball Theorem There is no continuous field of non-zero tangent vectors on an even dimensional sphere

In the same category someone needs to add the Ham Sandwich Theorem to Wikipedia. It can be found at MathWorld and PlanetMath

  4. Click on the link there and the sentence at the end of the first paragraph explains the relevance.
