{"id":1463,"date":"2010-03-13T06:52:24","date_gmt":"2010-03-13T06:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sixthform.info\/lawblog\/?p=1463"},"modified":"2010-03-13T06:52:24","modified_gmt":"2010-03-13T06:52:24","slug":"no-bilingual-juries-in-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sixthform.info\/lawblog\/?p=1463","title":{"rendered":"No bilingual juries in Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img alignleft size-full wp-image-1465\" style=\"width:129px;\">\r\n\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sixthform.info\/lawblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Welsh-dragon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sixthform.info\/lawblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Welsh-dragon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"129\" height=\"86\" \/><\/a>\r\n\t<div>Welsh dragon<\/div>\r\n<\/div>The government has decided against selecting bilingual juries in certain cases on the basis it would outweigh the principle of random selection.<\/p>\n<p>The decision follows a consultation looking at, for example, trials where large amounts of evidence are in Welsh.<\/p>\n<p>It has been met with dismay by politicians who believed it could play a part in an increase in bilingualism in Wales.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Justice Minister Claire Ward said: &#8220;This decision comes down to a choice between two good and desirable things &#8211; the principle of random selection in the jury system and greater use of the Welsh language in court.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Being tried for a serious offence by one&#8217;s fellow citizens is an important right and juries should be randomly selected from the whole community.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Participants in criminal and civil trials in Wales have the right to use the Welsh language in court and the government pays for interpreters to support this right.<\/p>\n<p>The 1993 Welsh Language Act makes clear reference to Welsh and English having equal treatment when administrating justice in Wales.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welsh dragon The government has decided against selecting bilingual juries in certain cases on the basis it would outweigh the principle of random selection.
