{"id":295,"date":"2006-04-12T21:51:07","date_gmt":"2006-04-12T21:51:07","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2006-04-12T21:51:07","modified_gmt":"2006-04-12T21:51:07","slug":"sentencing-guidelines-council-under-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sixthform.info\/lawblog\/?p=295","title":{"rendered":"Sentencing Guidelines Council under attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=ltr style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">In April 2006 the <strong>Sentencing Guidelines Council<\/strong> said that men who used violence against their partners should be sentenced to rehabilitation classes or community orders in some circumstances, they said, <br \/><em>&#8220;Rather than the imposition of a short custodial sentence, an appropriate disposal in such situations might be a suspended sentence order or a community order, in either case with a requirement to attend a domestic violence programme.&#8221; <br \/><\/em><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man hitting woman\" src=\"http:\/\/sixthform.info\/lawblog\/files\/man_hitting_woman.jpg\" border=0><br \/>The Metropolitan Police Authority responded immediately saying:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The proposals by the Sentencing Guidelines Council that those responsible for domestic violence could potentially escape custodial sentences for their brutality is a retrograde step and the Metropolitan Police Authority&#8217;s new Domestic Violence Board questions the logic and justice behind the suggestion. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We just have to look at the facts to see that domestic violence is a vicious and a repetitive crime.
