{"id":108,"date":"2006-01-31T21:41:32","date_gmt":"2006-01-31T21:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sixthform.info\/maths\/?p=108"},"modified":"2006-01-31T21:41:32","modified_gmt":"2006-01-31T21:41:32","slug":"goldbach-and-lewis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sixthform.info\/maths\/?p=108","title":{"rendered":"Goldbach and Lewis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not often that mathematics makes an appearance on British TV so I was suprised to see it in <b>Lewis<\/b>, ITV&#8217;s follow up to the Inspector Morse series (see for example <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvsquad.com\/2006\/01\/29\/lewis-and-the-ghost-of-inspector-morse\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lewis, and the Ghost of Inspector Morse<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/programmes\/newsnight\/review\/4652220.stm#lewis\" target=\"_blank\">Newsnight Review<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Oxford University often appeared in the Morse programmes and this time in <b>Lewis<\/b> it featured a very bright student who had shown that a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fields_medal\" target=\"_blank\">Fields&#8217;<\/a> medallist work on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goldbach%27s_conjecture\" target=\"_blank\">Goldbach Conjecture<\/a> was flawed, leading to all sorts of murders. Along the way we were shown what a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perfect_number\" target=\"_blank\">perfect number<\/a> was, as perfect numbers were used for passwords.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a pity that the mathematics shown on one of the whiteboards was elementary coordinate geometry :).
