It appears that there are similar problems in Australia as described in <a href=\"http:\/\/larvatusprodeo.net\/2007\/01\/22\/mathematics-dying-on-the-vine-in-australian-universities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mathematics dying on the vine in Australian universities<\/a>. As Alexandre Borovik of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maths.manchester.ac.uk\/~avb\/micromathematics\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mathematics under the Microscope<\/a>, who pointed me to the post, says (well almost, I&#8217;ve slightly altered what he wrote) <\/p>\n<ul><i>We continue to underestimate the gravity of the crisis of mathematical, and, more generally, scientific education [in] Western civilization.<\/i><\/ul>\n<p> So the question is <i>What are we going to do about it?<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those of us who live and work in the UK are worried about the crisis in mathematics in this country, both in schools and universities.
