History made by Lord Clarke, the first supreme court justice

Friday 24 July 2009 at 11:54 am | In News | Post Comment Lord Clarke, the outgoing Master of the Rolls, is the first person to be appointed as a supreme court justice, taking up his post on October 1.  He is not a Law Lord.

Clarke, who was created a life peer in April, is however, eligible to sit in the House of Lords, even though he is not one of the 12 law lords.  Lord Judge, the Lord Chief Justice can also sit as a Law Lord as Lord Woolf did.

The law lords sit for the last time this week.

All 12 law lords become justices of the supreme court on October 1.
